She should rely on friends and family to help her set up the occasion. She can rest assured that they will do so. Few events are as momentous as a woman having a child. If her friends and family care about her at all, they will certainly celebrate it.
Baby shower gifts have gone a long way from mere presents. They have become an entire social ritual all to themselves. The media can take the credit for this. Also, increasing sophistication in the consumer culture has contributed to this phenomenon. Gone are the days when a simple bib would suffice. Now, one has to deal with online gift lists and the like. This is another example of information technology creeping into every corner of our lives. Let us hope the little tykes do not get sick of all this by the time they grow up. Just imagine what they are going to have to deal with!
